RFNBOs (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) are renewable fuels produced without the use of biomass. They are created through the electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, combined with carbon from non-fossil sources, such as CO₂ captured from the air. Examples include green hydrogen, e-methanol, e-kerosene, and e-ammonia.

What is the RFNBO certification?

The requirements for RFNBOs are defined in European legislation on Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin, including sustainability, traceability and greenhouse gas reduction. These fuels contribute to the sustainability of sectors where direct electrification is not feasible, such as aviation, shipping, heavy road transport, and the chemical industry. Within the European Union, certification is mandatory for organizations that wish to produce, trade, or utilize RFNBOs. With ISCC EU certification, organizations can demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the RED II and RED III directives. DEKRA is an officially recognized certification body and conducts independent audits of processes, systems, and documentation for ISCC RFNBO certification in accordance with applicable standards.

How does the RFNBO certification process work?

The RFNBO certification process consists of several steps, from preparation to annual recertification. DEKRA conducts independent assessments based on ISCC EU standards.
