The development of OCPP
The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) was developed by the OCA in 2009. The OCPP 1.6 protocol can be used by any stakeholder in the industry. The correct exchange of information between a charging station and the management system (Charging Station Management System; CSMS) is key. The aim is to provide an open communication standard that the charging stations and management systems produced by different suppliers can use to communicate easily with each other.
In 2015, OCPP 1.6 entered the market. OCPP 1.6 is based on its predecessor, OCPP 1.5. Several new functions have been added and a number of improvements have been made. One important new function in OCPP 1.6 is smart charging. It involves the charger communicating with the EV, the charging station and charging operators via a data connection. The charging station automatically sends important data as soon as you connect your EV up to it, which optimises the charging process. Amongst other things, this makes sure you do not exceed the maximum capacity of your vehicle’s.
OCPP 1.6 test by DEKRA
Over the years, DEKRA has gained extensive e-mobility knowledge and experience. We test and certify every type of charging station and charging station management system (CSMS), against OCPP 1.6, OCPP 2.0.1 and other standards. This enables us to offer our customers a total e-mobility test solution. We also test other e-mobility products, like electric motors, battery management systems and inverters.
