DEKRA Product Testing
Is charging an electric vehicle easy for users of your charging stations?
ISO 15118
The global communication standard facilitating communication between electric vehicles (EV's) and charging stations.
A robust, secure and interoperable charging infrastructure for electric vehicles cannot exist without communication standards. ISO 15118 is the global communication standard facilitating communication between electric vehicles (EV's) and charging stations. This makes charging considerably more straightforward for the user, enabling you to optimize your service. If you are interested in certification for this standard, DEKRA's experts are ready to conduct the necessary tests for you.
Why ISO 15118 Certification?
Charging an electric vehicle should be as simple for users. Electric Vehicle controller and charging station controllers that comply with ISO 15118 requirements, enable a robust, safe, secure and for the EV driver seamless charging experience across the different EV or EVSE manufacturers. The standard supports AC and DC charging, charging with RFID cards or other payment terminals or the more sophisticated plug and charge.
In addition, ISO 15118 facilitates dynamic and scheduled charging including the ability to support smart charging based on EV information such as State of Charge of the battery, energy demand, expected departure time and varying charging tariffs. Smart charging supports efficient utilization of the available grid resources and fair power sharing in particular for larger charge parks. The exchange of information between EV and EVSE in real time allows the EV and EVSE to constantly monitor charging progress and to respond to abnormal and unsafe situation instantly.
The standard leaves room for different interpretations
However, while implementing the ISO protocol, the standard leaves room for different interpretations and implementations which can result in interoperability issues between charger and electric vehicles, failed charging session and inferior user experience. Testing of ISO 15118 applications ensures that all functionalities of electric vehicles and charging stations including a safe power transfer are in compliance with the ISO 15118 requirements and reduce interoperability issues in the field.
Testing typically address all aspects of charging, from basic signalling, establishing a secure communication channel and successfully, authenticate and authorize the charging session to exchange charging parameters and terminate a charging session. ISO 15118 testing does address correct handling of all required certificates for the plug and charge service including invalid and expired certificates.
Testing ensures a high level of interoperability and verifies that the application works seamlessly in real world scenarios. Demonstrating compliance with ISO 15118 requirements provides regulators, operators and consumer confidence in the quality and reliability of the EV or EVSE.
What does the certification process for ISO 15118 look like?
Your certification application is received by our sales department, which internally forwards it to one of our ISO 15118 specialists. They will contact you to discuss your application, based on which we will provide a quote. Upon your approval, the testing plan begins. You send the necessary items to our laboratory in Arnhem, where we conduct the tests. If we identify any issues, we ask you to make the necessary adjustments. If our experts determine that you meet all requirements, you will receive the ISO 15118 certificate.
