ISED certification
DEKRA Product Testing

ISED, for radio equipment, services and technologies released on the Canadian market.

ISED certification

The Canadian standard

ISED certification is specifically for radio equipment, services, and technologies introduced to the Canadian market. ISED (Innovation, Science, Economic Development Certification) sets the technical requirements and safety standards for all radio equipment used in the country. Therefore, ISED certification is a mandatory process for all radio equipment sold or imported into Canada.

The certification process can also be conducted by certification bodies outside of Canada. ISED Canada has appointed several certification bodies authorized to evaluate product test reports and issue certificates. DEKRA is one of the appointed certification bodies (FCB) and is happy to assist you with the ISED certification process. With DEKRA's product testing services in the areas of EMC and radio testing, your products can receive ISED certification.

What is ISED?

ISED is a quality assurance process that approves products, services, and technologies for the Canadian market. A similar certification process exists in the U.S., known as the FCC certification. However, the FCC certification does not grant approval in Canada. Without ISED certification, manufacturers cannot access the Canadian market. ISED ensures compliance with legal standards and promotes innovation and economic growth.
Products that require an ISED certificate include:
  • Electronic devices
  • WLAN equipment
  • Lighting equipment
  • Audio, video, and IT equipment
  • Aerospace and defense equipment
  • Amusement and theme park equipment
  • Non-electronic products or equipment that do not use electricity or batteries do not require ISED certification.

ISED certification process

The ISED certification process involves several key steps:
1. Identify the standards applicable to the product, service, or technology.
2. Provide the required documentation to DEKRA, such as technical specifications and test reports.
3. DEKRA conducts various tests to verify compliance with requirements for radio frequency emissions, electrical safety, and EMC.
4. After reviewing the test results, it is determined whether your product meets the standard. If compliant, the ISED certificate is issued.
5. After receiving the certificate, you are required to display the ISED certification label on your product. The ISED label consists of a company number (CN) and a unique product number (UPN). The CN number is specified by the Canadian authority, while the UPN number is chosen by you as the manufacturer, consisting of up to 11 alphanumeric characters.
