DEKRA Product Testing

Do your audio, video, IT and communications products meet the European product safety standard?

IEC 62368 certification

IEC 62368 is the safety standard that all European audio/video, IT, and communication products must comply with. This standard, which came into effect on December 20, 2020, replaces IEC 60950 and IEC 60065. The objective? To further improve product safety by addressing potential risks during use. DEKRA experts are ready to assist you with testing and certification, getting your product ready for (inter)national markets.

HBSE: A Modern Approach to Safety

To improve product safety , the IEC 62368 standard applies an innovative method: Hazard-Based Safety Engineering (HBSE). This approach focuses on risks that arise when a product component fails or does not function properly. An important question within this standard is: How safe is your product if a component fails or does not function as it should? The standard emphasizes identifying all potential hazards and, in particular, those associated with energy transfer. It also evaluates the effectiveness of the corresponding safety measures.

Types of energy transfer within IEC 62368

The standard considers six types of energy transfer, each with distinct risks:
  • Electrical energy (e.g., electric shocks, cardiac arrest)
  • Thermal energy (e.g., fire, burns, material damage)
  • Chemical energy (e.g., poisoning or physical injury)
  • Kinetic energy (e.g., moving parts, cuts)
  • Radiant energy (e.g., damage from light or sound, burns)
