Certification according to IEC 61439
For safe low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies
IEC 61439 is the international standard for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies. The standard emerged from the desire to provide assurances of the safety, reliability and performance of electrical distribution systems. The IEC 61439 standard sets out requirements for the design, manufacture, testing and performance of switchgear and controlgear assemblies. It also covers aspects such as environmental conditions, electrical values, protective measures and documentation. Are you looking for an independent test house to certify your product according to IEC 61439? DEKRA would be happy to help you.
What are the testing requirements of the IEC 61439 standard?
The IEC 61439 standard describes a variety of tests requirements that must be conducted on
lowvoltage
switchgear and controlgear assemblies. The tests are carried out in a laboratory, such as DEKRA's own lab facilities. Various tests are performed such as:
- Temperature rise test switchgear
We measure the temperature rise of the switchgear material (or circuit breaker) during operation, to ensure that it remains within safe limits. - Verification of the short-circuit withstand strength
We subject the switchgear material to a simulated short circuit event. With this, we test whether the material can withstand the high currents and pressures that occur during such an event. - Testing of the degree of protection
We test whether the switchgear offers sufficient protection against dust and water ingress. The requirements regarding dust and water are described in IEC 61439. - Check of dielectric properties
We measure whether the switchgear can withstand high voltages without failing. - Verification of mechanical operation
We test whether the switchgear can be operated safely and reliably under normal operating conditions. - Verification of the degree of protection of persons against electric shock
To meet IEC 61439 compliance, we test whether the switchgear provides sufficient protection against electric shock. - Verification of insulation resistance and electrical strength at operating temperatures
We measure the switchgear's electrical resistance and insulating properties at operating temperatures to verify that these are within acceptable limits. - Optional tests include EMC, RF and cybersecurity.
